Everything
verhaalstory
Everything,Is and Fine:three short interludes that together spell the album's title. Everything opens, Is sits in the middle, Fine closes. That triptych wasn't planned. I was looking for a way to work the title into the record, and towards the end of the writing process I realised it lined up perfectly with the three short interludes. And how nice that Fine also ended up as the closing piece of the record.
And of course the album title is ironic, because it isn't fine at all. Because I work with AI regularly myself, I see what it can do and how fast it's improving, and I don't get the feeling many people realise that. If we don't make some strong choices soon, the future looks anything but bright. At the same time,I believe that using AI in a positive way could solve a lot of the world's problems. Whether we'll do that as a society remains to be seen...

A Way Out
verhaalstory
The hopeful counter-voice on the album, and that's why it's the first single. There's a positive way out of this story, and it's still in our hands. Unfortunately, whether we take it depends on a small group of individuals, mostly in the US and China,in whom I don't have much faith right now. Still, I want to keep believing in a positive outcome, and to make clear that the choice really is still ours (humanity's).

Trust Issues
verhaalstory
It's no accident that Trust Issues comes right before Slobfest. With all the AI slop on the internet now, nobody can trust what they see online anymore. Everyone is getting trust issues, or already has them. And it's only going to get worse.
In this case, that's not necessarily a bad thing: it's high time that we as a society fact-check everything we consume online, instead of simply believing it. A few trust issues can't hurt (in this case).

The ironic party name for the AI slop already flooding the internet. In 2025, slop even became Merriam-Webster's word of the year, and not without reason. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, you'll hear as soon as the bass and drums come in.

Mythos
verhaalstory
Named after Claude Mythos, the AI model by Anthropic that made world news in April 2026. The company decided not to release it:the model was so good at finding weaknesses in software that it was considered too great a cybersecurity risk. Only a small group of large companies were allowed to use it,to secure their own systems. A few months later the US government stepped in as well, and the newest Mythos models were unavailable altogether for weeks.
A more fitting name for this album hardly exists. The record is about how unprepared we are for AI and technology, and here are the first consequences:the first model we no longer trust, one that can't just be put in human hands. Musically, it sounds like a mythical creature too: a soprano high above a soundscape, with a linear build towards a climax.

            The Awesome Button

          verhaalstory

Een like gaat namelijk over jou: jíj vindt iets leuk.

Starts from a footnote in tech history: Facebook once considered an awesome button instead of a like button. I wonder what the world would look like if it had. After all, a like is about you: you think something is good. An awesome is something you grant to someone else. So instead of a world where everyone is preoccupied with how many likes they have picked up, in an ideal world we might have been preoccupied with how many awesomes we had given someone that day. A small alternative, but not a trivial one. Could someone please build this and replace Facebook with it?

Kids, just like adults, quickly got hooked on their phones. They pay less attention in class and stopped talking to each other during breaks. Teachers describe it as ‘dead silence’. Since some schools banned phones from classrooms and breaks, the cafeteria is loud again. A teacher in Colorado summed it up in three words:“It's loud again.”

Wees gewaarschuwd.

If you want to drive a black cab in London, you have to pass The Knowledge: an exam for which you memorise some 25,000 streets around Charing Cross, plus every landmark along them. It takes years. Brain research showed that the hippocampus, the part of the brain that handles spatial memory, is larger in London cab drivers. And a large 2024 study found that taxi and ambulance drivers are the least likely to die of Alzheimer's. The researchers suspect a link with all that navigating.
Meanwhile,Waymo's self-driving taxis are coming to London. If that knowledge disappears, that protection might disappear with it. A very distant consequence of the rise of AI: London cab drivers whose brain health takes a hit. You'll hear what that distant consequence sounds like in the outro. Be warned.

Still Point is the eye of the storm, the place inside where everything goes quiet: the stillness I sometimes look for while everything around me is chaos. The soprano keeps repeating the same lyrical melody over a single bass note, while guitarist Tom Veltien tears around it like the storm itself. The piece builds to a euphoric moment where everything blows apart, followed by a happy ending.
That's more or less how I see the whole AI race:there's still a chance this ends well. It just depends entirely on us.

Radiology
verhaalstory
In 2016,AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton said we should stop training radiologists:within a few years,AI would do it better. Radiology was seen as the first profession machines would take over. Almost ten years later, more radiologists are needed than ever, not least to work with all those machines. In 2025,US residency programmes offered a record number of radiology positions.
The (understandable) story that AI is going to replace every job is terrifying,of course, and that's exactly why I found this a refreshing example of the other side of the coin.

Schrijfproces
Dertien tracks bleven over.
Kunstmatige intelligentie versus echte kunst
Een like gaat over jou:jíj vindt iets leuk.
Daarom is A Way Out de eerste single.
Opnameproces
Enjoy.

        Writing process
For months, I set my alarm almost every morning for an hour of writing, with one rule: whatever I started in that hour had to be finished in it. It produced forty sketches, which all ended up in one sprawling Logic project. That was where the real work began: figuring out what fitted, which ideas could be fused, what could grow into a new piece. My 2023 debut was a collection of compositions written over the preceding years; this time I started from nothing, working from themes and motifs. Thirteen tracks were left.
What the music was actually about, I didn't know for a long time. I could feel that it was about something, but I couldn't put it into words. Until I realised where all my attention had been going alongside the writing: my interest in everything to do with AI, and in our growing dependence on technology, was rising exponentially, and I had started devouring opinion pieces, podcasts and videos about this huge subject. Then it clicked: of course those thirteen tracks were about this. About AI and technology, and about how unprepared we are for what is coming.

        Artificial intelligence vs real art
Hence the title. Collectively we behave as though nothing is happening — Everything Is Fine — while technology and AI are taking up more and more space in our world, and fast. That frustrates me more and more. I'm angry at the tech bosses pushing this through to make money off it. I don't believe a word of all that talk about only wanting to improve the world. At the same time, I'm baffled by everyone acting as though this is still the ChatGPT of 2022 that couldn't really do anything. Use it now, test it. It's a world of difference, and I don't understand how not everyone is stunned by the speed at which this technology is improving. So this album is a warning, a call: we need to do something about this, and soon.
I use AI regularly myself, and the contradiction hasn't escaped me:warning people about the dangers of AI and technology while reaching for the same tools. I use a lot of AI across the whole operation around FLUX:the website was partly built with AI,mapping and approaching venues happens with its help, and I even had AI build me a small program that turns an hour of live footage of the band into short, snappy reels I can use for Instagram and YouTube.
But the line for where I use AI is drawn very deliberately:office work and admin only, never anything creative. All the music was,of course, written without any input from AI whatsoever. This is how I see the ideal use of AI:it handles the office work that takes up most of a musician's working week in 2026, so that I have time to write music, practise the saxophone and build a good live set.
I left the visual side of FLUX to people as well: makers I hold in high regard. Designer Bob Wiebes designed the logo and helped shape the rest of the visual identity and the website, from typography to layout. The band photos were directed and shot by Teemu Kekkonen.

        A harder sound
And that music sounds unlike anything I've written before. I describe my 2023 debut FLUX as pretty, lyrical,a little cinematic,well-behaved maybe. Everything Is Fine is harder and rougher, and the frustration is audible. The music gets to the point faster, the dynamic range is wide, and the familiar jazz format of theme, solo, theme has largely been abandoned. The tracks are built from sections that flow into one another:a theme starts on the saxophone, moves to the double bass and carries on at the piano, while the guitar introduces a new motif.
That places FLUX somewhere between contemporary jazz, electronic music and post-rock. The sweeping melodies recall saxophonist Donny McCaslin, while the harmonic structures have something of Aaron Parks' Little Big and Brad Mehldau's Finding Gabriel. The album title is hidden in this concept album too:Everything,Is and Fine are three short interludes that tie the tracks together, and many pieces run into each other without a pause.
The song titles
The titles give a lot away. Slobfest is the ironic party name for the AI slop already flooding the internet;Fake News is about the rising tide of disinformation now threatening democracies. The Awesome Button starts from a footnote in tech history:Facebook once considered an awesome button instead of a like button. I wonder what the world would have looked like if it had. A like is about you:you think something is good. An awesome is something you grant to someone else. So instead of a world where everyone is preoccupied with how many likes they have picked up,in an ideal world we might have been preoccupied with how many awesomes we had given someone that day. A small alternative, but not a trivial one.
Still Point refers to the eye of the storm, the place inside where everything goes quiet:the stillness I sometimes look for while everything around me is chaos. The soprano keeps repeating the same lyrical melody over a single bass note, while guitarist Tom Veltien tears around it like the storm itself;the piece builds to a euphoric moment where everything blows apart, and afterwards it turns out fine. That's more or less how I see the whole AI race: there's still a chance this ends well, but it depends entirely on us. Which is why A Way Out is the first single. There is a way out,and it is still in our hands. Who knows how many other problems we'll solve along the way.

        Recording process
The album was recorded in February, in two days, in one large room at the Muziekhuis in Utrecht. Live, because that's what it comes down to for me:playing together,in the same space. Freek Mulder, who also plays double bass, produced the record and added a great deal afterwards;while the whole thing sounds more electronic than the debut,at its core it's still five people in one room. I wrote the pieces but left a lot open; in the rehearsals leading up to the sessions, the band made the hard musical calls together. The first album was still emphatically my album, with plenty of solos from me. On Everything Is Fine I deliberately play less. I don't have to be playing all the time in this band. The five of us have equal space on this album.
Delaney Nelom is the new addition on piano;he shines with his dynamic playing on both piano and keyboards. Tom Veltien can let loose on guitar even more now that the music is harder and has post-rock influences. Drummer Yordi Petit and double bassist Freek Mulder play up front and attack the music;it never sounds safe. On top of that I play tenor and soprano sax, this time processed through a wide range of effects.
The three interludes mark out the shape of the record:Everything opens,Is sits in the middle and Fine-fittingly enough-closes. It has turned into a concept album, anything but optimised for streaming services. The tracks run into each other and there's a clear arc from beginning to end. So I'd recommend listening to the album all the way through, front to back. Enjoy.
